Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Dark Black Currant, Macerated Blueberry, Bright Violet, Tar, with a gripping tannin profile that supports the intensity of fruit.
Vineyard Notes
Powicana vineyard is on the edge of a plateau surrounded by mountains above Mendocino Lake. The rich red color of the clay soil, a Red vine sandy clay loam, is the signature of the vineyard. A gentle breeze from the lake cools the vineyard on the hottest days. In honor of the people who lived on that land, it was named it Powicana, the Pomo word for Red Clay Ridge. The farmers believe the soil is the living substrate that finds its final expression in the wine. They converted the vineyard to no-till and are on a path to dry-farm.
Production Notes
This wine required particular attention as tannic extraction became a noticeable issue early in its fermentation. The wine when pressed was black and unforgiving with tannin so strong it was difficult to taste. The fruit aromatics were powerful and beautiful but the wine clearly needed time. The combination of perfect chemistry and the tannin profile allowed this wine to be aged an additional year in barrel though no preservatives were used.
Winemaker Notes
After over two years in barrel the wine was bottled without any preservatives or filtering. No ingredients went into this wine other than grapes. Natural. Pure.
Food Pairing Notes
This is an intense wine that would pair well with bbq ribeye and charred vegetables
